Biomass

Biomass is organic material from plants, trees or manure. Just like oil, coal and gas, biomass can be converted to heat and electricity. In contrast to these fossil fuels, due to growing and new plantings, plants and trees take as much CO2 from the air as is emitted during combustion. Therefore, biomass is called a renewable energy source.

Biomass fuels are derived from four sources: forestry residues, agricultural residues such as straw from cereal production, agro-processing residues en energy crops grown specially for use as fuel. These can be used to generate electricity in thermal power plant, or as a district heating fuel.
